Paris, 1942. A la blanchisserie Lavandier, le patron Armand, épaulé par son épouse Marcelle et son fils aîné Jean, tente d'offrir une qualité de service semblable à celle d'avant-guerre. Lorsque les clientes lui demandent des nouvelles de Jacques, son cadet, il leur annonce son retour imminent du sanatorium. En réalité, le benjamin purge une peine de prison pour trafic … Un soir, en quittant la boutique, Jean aperçoit une jeune femme en qui il reconnaît Sarah, une amie d'enfance, juive. Toute la famille a été massacrée, Sarah seule en a réchappé. Déterminé à l'aider, Jean l'emmène chez Philippe, son amant, qui accepte de l'héberger.
Celui-ci lui fournit rapidement des papiers d'identité au nom d'Yvonne Brunner. Mais Jacques, jaloux de son frère et surtout de
son ami, quand il lui avoue son homosexualité le dénonce à la police française, sans penser à la suite (les camps nazi !).

One evening, by leaving the shop, Jean sees a young woman in whom he recognizes Sarah, a childhood's friend and jewish. All the
family was exterminated, Sarah alone escaped. Determined to help her, Jean takes Sarah along to Philippe, his lover, who accepts to lodge her. This one quickly provides her identity papers with the name of Yvonne Brunner. But Jacques, jealous of his brother and especially of his friend, when he acknowledges his homosexuality denounces him to the french police, without thinking of whats gonna happen (the Nazi camps !).
