Government accused of U-turn over faith schools' teaching on homosexuality

The government has been accused of performing a U-turn over an amendment allowing faith schools to teach about homosexuality in line with their "religious character".

Last week, schools secretary Ed Balls tabled an amendment to the Children, Schools and Families Bill that would allow faith schools to teach sex education "in a way that reflects the school’s religious character".

The amendment was designed to make clear that equality requirements do not force governing bodies or heads to teach about issues such as homosexuality and contraception in a particular way.

The Catholic Education Service claims to have successfully lobbied for the amendment on its website.

Campaigners say this means faith schools will be permitted to teach that homosexuality is wrong and that contraception and abortion are sinful. Around a third of schools in England are faith schools.

Some have gone as far as to describe it as "the new Section 28′, in reference to the 1988 law which banned the "promotion" of homosexuality. It was repealed in 2003.

Chairman of the Accord Coalition, a group for inclusive education, Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain said: "It is astonishing that the government plans to deny young people of their right to accurate, balanced PSHE [personal, social and health education] and sex and relationships education, and allow state funded schools to teach the subject from a particular religious viewpoint.”

“By taking this position, Ed Balls is implicitly condoning homophobia in schools and undermining attempts to tackle homophobic bullying. After Labour has done so much for equality, this looks like a 21st century Section 28 .”

The Pink Triangle Trust's secretary George Broadhead agreed, saying: "By taking this position, [the government] is implicitly condoning homophobia in schools and undermining attempts to tackle homophobic bullying. This looks like another Section 28.”

Andrew Copson, the chief executive of the British Humanist Association, added: "The government has U-turned on their commitment to young people, trading children's rights for the support of a minority religious lobby.

"We are deeply concerned that the government’s amendment effectively gives licence to faith schools to teach SRE [sex and relationships education] in ways that are homophobic, gender discriminatory and otherwise violate principles of human rights."

Liberal Democrat shadow schools secretary David Laws said the U-turn was "serious and undesirable".

Mr Laws added: “State-funded schools should not be free to put their own spin on sex and relationship education.

“The government should not pander in any way either to homophobia or to those who want young people kept in the dark when they are already exposed to these issues through the media well before the age of 16.”

According to the bill, schools should ensure that sex education “[is] appropriate to the ages of the pupils concerned and to their religious and cultural backgrounds”, “reflects a reasonable range of religious, cultural and other perspectives” and “emphasises the importance of both rights and responsibilities.”

A spokesman from the Department for Children, Schools and Families said that all schools would have to teach sex education when the new requirements came into law next year.

He told the Guardian: "All maintained schools will be required to teach full programmes of study in line with the principles outlined in the bill, including promoting equality and encouraging acceptance of diversity.

"Schools with a religious character will be free to express their faith and reflect the ethos of their school, but what they cannot do is suggest that their views are the only ones."

Amsterdam winners may get kisses from gay men, not girls

A left-wing party in Holland has suggested that winners of a cycle race should swap the traditional celebration of kisses from attractive girls for kisses from gay men.

Usually, the winner of the Amsterdam leg of the famous cycle race Giro d'Italia stands on a podium surrounded by women in miniskirts who kiss him.

Instead, a politician in the liberal city has argued that gay men should enjoy the honour of congratulating winners.

Associated Press reports that Fjodor Molenaar, an alderman from the Green Left party, which is part of the city's governing coalition, said: "It should be possible for gay men to celebrate with the winner. One rider in ten is gay."

The proposal has received support in the city, with a city spokesman saying: "It's an appealing proposal that fits well with the Amsterdam's tradition of supporting gay emancipation."

The owner of the television station which organises the winners' ceremony said he would prefer to see women on the podium but confirmed that three entrants for a contest to appear on the podium were gay men.

CONTROVERSIAL FROM BEGINNING TO END PREMIERE POSTPONED/ DO COMECO AO FIM - BRAZILIAN FILM

Perhaps set to become one of the most controversial films to come out of Brazilian cinema, a trailer for From Beginning to End, a movie about two brother's ...The film tells the story of two male brothers that develop a very close relationship when they are kids and such relationship becomes an incestuous love when they grow up.

I strongly support the right of artists to explore and express whatever ideas and/or vision they see fit. Art is how societies change and evolve, and because of that, there can’t be any topics in art that are “off-limits” to artists and this movie is a very genuinely thoughtful exploration of a very touchy subject.

Rafael Cardoso, João Gabriel Vasconcelos as two incestuous brothers in From Beginning to End

"Brazilian filmmaker Aluízio Abranches‘ Do Começo ao Fim (From Beginning to End), which revolves around a love affair between two brothers, has generated quite a bit of discussion in Brazilian online forums even though the film hasn’t been released, yet. Those waiting to check it out at the upcoming Festival do Rio, Rio de Janeiro’s international film festival, which runs Sept. 24-Oct. 8, will be disappointed.
Abranches has declared that his film won’t be ready in time for its scheduled screening. (Eliane Caffé’s O Sol do Meio Dia [The Midday Sun], about a dangerous love triangle in the Brazilian hinterlands, will take its slot.) As a result, Do Começo ao Fim will reach Brazilian screens only in November

Do começo ao fim - Teaser from marcos carioca on Vimeo.

According to Rosangela Dantas of the Rio daily Jornal do Brasil, who lauds Abranches’ effort to shake things up with his latest film, Brazilian cinema "has had its trajectory marked by prudishness and hypocrisy. Polemical subjects have almost invariably been treated in a superficial manner, making the movies in question prisoners of an absurd moral conduct."

In the Do Começo ao Fim cast: Rafael Cardoso, João Gabriel Vasconcelos, Gabriel Kaufmann, Lucas Cotrim, Júlia Lemmertz, Fábio Assunção, Jean Pierre Noher, and veteran Louise Cardoso.

By the way, more than 300 films from more than 60 countries are scheduled to be screened at the Festival do Rio’s many sidebars, among them Premiere Brasil, Global Panorama, Gay World, Limits and Borders, and Midnight Movies.
About 90 of the aforementioned films will come from France, as 2009 is the Year of France in Brazil. The French film series will include a mini-retrospective dedicated to Isabelle Huppert and an homage to Jeanne Moreau."

Anti-Gay Protester Gets Dose Of Her Own Medicine

"An angry loser (right) came to Syracuse University to make a fool of herself by spreading pathetic hatred and was treated to a happy mutant style stunt by this smiling student, named Chris Pesto (left).

I decided that because this woman thought it was okay to make me feel uncomfortable in my home, I would retaliate and make her feel just as uncomfortable, if not more.
This woman was wearing a ankle-length corduroy skirt, which, as we all know, is a fashion nono. So, in order to make her feel uncomfortable, I stood next to her and held a sign that said Corduroy skirts are a sin! I don't think I have ever drawn so much attention in my life. SO many people asked to take a picture with me, I got laughs, high fives and there were the few that even cursed off the woman standing behind me.

As I drew interest to what was going on with myself and the woman with the hateful sign, I started to draw a crowd that stood with me in support. Before I knew it I had 100+ people holding signs for gay rights asking people to honk their horns to support. I was interviewed by a news station, and more than 5 student organization papers, and the post standard of syracuse.

I never expected anybody to come stand by me and support and I appreciate it so much that everyone came! It meant so much and it proved to those ignorant people that we aren't afraid, and we will put up a fight.

I'm proud that Syracuse has such a homosexual friendly community."
