Portia Wants to Officially Become Mrs. DeGeneres in Name

Lesbian It Couple Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are taking their now two-year-old marriage one step further as Portia has filed legal documents to change her name to Portia DeGeneres. This will actually be Portia's second legal name change -- at the age of 15, she changed her name from Amanda Lee Rogers to Portia de Rossi.


The documents, filed Aug. 6 in L.A., state the "petitioner is taking the last name of her spouse," though she is legally requesting her full name now be Portia Lee James DeGeneres. The change will take effect in late September.

Gay marriage name changes are tricky -- who takes what, who gives up what, what gets combined into who. We like the idea of Portia DeGeneres and it doesn't actually sound that different because of the shared 'De.' But it's a shame to see such a cool, albeit totally fake name like Portia di Rossi given up.
